Taking in a movie is no longer relegated to the same cookie-cutter theaters. Unique offerings, designs and locations make your theater of choice just as much a part of the experience as the actual movie.

These theaters in Atlanta lend an epic element to any cinematic night out.

Epic room

There is no armrest sharing at Regal Cinemas at Avalon. Not only do they have leather reclining seats with tray tables, but there is also plenty of personal space to sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Epic comfort

Sure, there’s a bar allowing you to take an adult beverage into the movie. Add free parking in Buckhead and you’ve already hit stratospheric levels. Phipps Plaza is not just for shopping anymore, friends. Buy advance tickets and reserve your cozy red leather reclining seats at AMC Phipps Plaza.

Location: Buckhead/Northeast - 3500 Peachtree Rd NE; Website: amctheatres.com

Epic uniqueness

Opened in 1939, Plaza Theatre in Ponce-Highland is Atlanta’s oldest continuously operating cinema. This independent theater runs indie and cult classics and is a must-visit Atlanta venue. Looking for a fun Friday night? “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” has a standing show every Friday at midnight.

Location: East Atlanta - 1049 Ponce De Leon Ave NE; Website: plazaatlanta.com

Epic Atlanta

Looking for the ultimate Atlanta experience? Look no further than Peachtree Street. Originally conceived as headquarters for Atlanta’s Shriners organization and nurtured in the era of grand movie palaces, the magnificent Fox Theatre is arguably one of the most iconic Atlanta institutions.

Locals and visitors alike can take a tour through Egyptian decor and under twinkling stars to learn the stories of film screen stars, epic debuts, music history and ghostly residents of the Fox. In addition to Broadway shows and intimate musical evenings, summer brings the throwback to its cinematic origins as the annual Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival brings blockbuster family classics to the big screen. Singalongs lead by “Mighty Mo,” the largest Möller theatre organ in the world, make these movie-watching experiences especially memorable.

Location: Midtown - 660 Peachtree St NE; Website: foxtheatre.org

Epic martinis

IMAX theaters are growing in number. Buford, Alpharetta, Kennesaw, Douglasville, Lithonia, Morrow and Atlanta all boast AMC or Regal theaters offering the IMAX experience. There is one IMAX theater that offers an experience unlike any other, though.

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History offers an IMAX movie on the “biggest screen in town.” And at Fernbank After Dark you can enjoy craft beer, food, live music, culture, science stuff, and of course, martinis.

Location: East Atlanta - 767 Clifton Rd; Website: fernbankmuseum.org

Epic environment

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the cool relief of the evening while watching a movie under the stars. The growing trend of venues and cities hosting outdoor movie events gives metro-Atlantans a long list of opportunities to snuggle under the stars.

Start with Duluth’s Flicks on the Bricks outdoor movie season. They start off the warmer months with a bang on June 3rd with “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Tune in later in the summer for “Aladdin,” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
