Atlanta natives Latto and Future among 2022 MTV Video Music Awards nominees
It’s that time of year again – the 2022 MTV VMA nominees are in!
Georgia native, Lil Nas X is in a three-way tie for the most nominations - Jack Harlow and Kendrick Lamar join him, with seven nominations each. Lil Nas X could break a record this year if he were to win what’s known to many as the top award of the night, the Video of the Year award. Last year, Lil Nas X won the award for his video for “Montero (Call Me by Your Name).” Let’s see if he can hang on to his title, as he’s nominated in the category again for his collaboration with Jack Harlow, “Industry Baby.” If the duo were to win, Lil Nas X would become the first artist to win back-to-back Video of the Year awards.
Not far behind the tie for first are Harry Styles and Doja Cat, who is this year’s top female nominee, coming in with six nominations each. Coming in with five nominations each, are Taylor Swift, The Weekend, Billie Eilish, Drake, Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa. BTS should be proud, as they are the most nominated group/duo, racking up four nominations.
Atlanta natives Latto and Future are bringing in three nominations each. Latto is nominated for Best New Artist and Video for Good, while Future is nominated for Best Collaboration and Best Art Direction for “Way 2 Sexy” (featuring Drake and fellow Atlanta native Young Thug). Both Latto and Future are also nominated in the Best New Hip Hop category – Latto for her song “Big Energy” and Future for his song “Wait For U” featuring Drake and Tems.
For the first time in VMA’s 39-year history, MTV expanded the number of nominees for Video of the Year, to seven. There are also seven nominees for Best Collaboration, Best Alternative and Artist of the Year.
Speaking of Artist of the Year, Bad Bunny is the first Latin artist to be nominated for the category. Some may argue that Camila Cabello won a few years back, but she’s mainly a pop artist. It won’t be an easy win though, as there are several other heavy hitters in the category. Ed Sheeran, who was the first winner in the category back when it was introduced in 2017, is nominated again. If Sheeran should win again, he’ll be the first two-time winner in the Artist of the Year category. Drake, Lizzo, Harry Styles, Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow are also nominated.
