Monica closes out Black Music Month with classic Tiny Desk concert
One thing we know for sure about Monica, is that she will continue to give us hit after hit!
The songstress brought all her hits and all the R&B vibes to her NPR Tiny Desk (Home) Concert performance. Monica performed on a simple and chic set, surrounded by candles, a few background vocalists, and a handful of band members. Her pink outfit was just enough to make her pop in such a subtle surrounding. I was personally very excited that she kicked off her performance by singing one of her biggest hits and one of my personal favorites, “Angel of Mine.” During the performance, we also got to hear several of her classics including “Why I Love You So Much,” ‘Before You Walk Out of My Life” and “Love All Over Me.” Listeners were also in for a special treat during the performance, as Monica teased her song “Friends,” which is an upcoming collaboration she has with Ty Dolla $ign.
Speaking of new music from Monica, fans are still awaiting her upcoming country album. Her country music debut, “Pray” with Jimmie Allen may have come as a shock to some, but Monica was already working on her country album at the time of its release. “I grew up loving country music and my stepfather, who raised me, is a Methodist minister, but he also drove buses and he would take us to Nashville, Gatlinburg and Dollywood in Tennessee,” Monica told Billboard magazine last year. “I became a really big fan of Dolly Parton, at about 8 or 9 years old. That was my real introduction to country music. Shortly after, it was Kenny Rogers. I started listening to the depth of the songs and the fact that they were unafraid to say whatever it was they felt. I felt like this was a great time for me to really step into an area that I’ve always admired and loved. We’re just getting started, but I have so enjoyed it and been welcomed with open arms.”
