It’s almost that time of year again – one of the biggest nights in gospel music is coming to Atlanta.

The 37th Stellar Gospel Music Awards is returning to Atlanta for a live-to-tape ceremony on July 16 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. The nominees are in and there are some heavy hitters on the list, with Cece Winans leading the pack. Winans is the most nominated artist for the 2022 Stellar Gospel Music Awards with nine nominations. Winans is up for awards including, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and even Album of the year, all for her first live album, “Believe for It.”

Pastor Mike Jr. is not far behind with eight nominations, including Artist of the Year (which he won last year), Album of the Year, Producer of the Year and Male Artist of the Year. Coming in behind Mike Jr. with six nominations each are Jonathan McReynolds & Mali Music, Tamela Mann, and Todd Dulaney. One of my favorite groups, who was in Atlanta for their tour with Kirk Franklin not too long ago, Maverick City Music, received four nominations, along with Israel Houghton, E. Dewey Smith, Jason Clayborn and Ricky Dillard in their respective categories.

There will also be several people honored at the Stellars, including six-time Grammy Award-winning singer and producer Aaron Lindsey who will receive the Aretha Franklin Icon Award, Candi Staton will receive the Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones legends award and Ricky Dillard will be honored with the James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award.

Kirk Franklin received a nomination for the “Urban/Inspirational Single or Performance of the Year” for his song “We Win” featuring Atlanta’s own, Lil Baby. You may remember that the song was featured on “Space Jam: A New Legacy Official Soundtrack.”

Of course, in between the awards and honorees, there will be plenty of entertainment. The show is said to include performances by Tye Tribbett, Marvin Sapp, Maranda Curtis, Ricky Dillard, Kelontae Gavin, Rudy Currence, Chrisette Michele, DOE, James Fortune, Jason Nelson, Travis Greene, Darrel Walls and Jor’Dan Armstrong.

Kierra Sheard and Jakalyn Carr will co-host the show, which will air on BET, BET HER, and BET International in August.
