The Headies; Global Awards for Afrobeats Music coming to Atlanta
The Headies are headed to Atlanta!
What’s known as one of the most respected awards shows for Afrobeats music is coming to America. The Headies Awards will celebrate its 15th-year award ceremony right here in ATL.
Before we get into all the details, let’s break down exactly what The Headies are. The award show aims to celebrate Afrobeats and the musical sounds coming out of West, North and South Africa. The Headies mission is to magnify and expand African music, as well as all of its art forms.
Afrobeats’ impact has been undeniable, particularly in the past couple of years. In 2018, “The Black Panther” brought in more than 1.3 billion dollars to the box office worldwide, you could say it left viewers with a peaked interest in African music. Even Beyonce dove into the Afrobeats sound with the soundtrack for “The Lion King: The Gift,” – that soundtrack included several 2022 Headies nominees, like Burna Boy, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage. Other Headies nominees this year include Tems, Fireboy DML, Ayra Starr and Davido.
The rise of Afrobeats didn’t stop there. “Love Nwantiti (ah ah ah)” by CKay and “Higher” by Tems have been named some of the best-selling Afro-beats songs of all time. Even Billboard has recognized the true impact of the sound, as this past March, Billboard Magazine launched America’s first-ever AfroBeats chart association with Afro nation that’ll rank the top 50 most popular Afrobeats songs in the country. The influence is even seen on social media, as Burna Boy’s song “Last Last” has been a trending sound for weeks.
The Headies Awards are coming to Atlanta on September 4 at the Cobb Energy Center. The show will air in 89 countries across the continent of Africa and several digital platforms around the world. Learn all about the Headies by visiting theheadies.com.
