Here’s how your child can receive a healthy meal while school is out
On Monday, Mayor Andre Dickens announced that the City of Atlanta had launched its annual Summer Food Program, which will serve meals to children in underserved communities throughout Atlanta this summer.
School-aged children up to 18 will be provided breakfast and lunch at participating City of Atlanta recreation centers through Camp Best Friends and other partner locations. The program ends on July 29.

“This program allows the City to stand in the gap for Atlanta’s children — many of whom go hungry during the summer months when school-provided lunches are unavailable,” Mayor Dickens said in a news release. He then thanked “Parks and Recreation and our partners for leading our efforts to ensure our most vulnerable receive the reliable, healthy nutrition they deserve.”
According to the release, children enrolled in Camp Best Friends have immediate access to the program. Additionally, there is currently open enrollment in the Bright from the Start program through its nonprofit partners, libraries, and churches.
The Summer Food Program will relaunch its mobile feeding program on wheels for families without transportation.
“This summer, the aim is to serve an average of 3,000 meals daily to Atlanta children, totaling over 150,000 meals by summer’s end,” the news release stated.
