Tour: Afternoon tea in metro Atlanta

Back in the 17th century, tea took the British Isles by storm. It was first enjoyed in coffee houses and touted for its medicinal qualities. One Dutch East India Company director, Nicolas Dirx, claimed in his “Observationes Medicae” that all who drank the herb would be “exempt from all maladies and reach an extreme old age,” all self-interest aside of course.

The medicinal qualities of tea have been proven over time, perhaps not quite to the extent as the Dutch traders declared. But the consumption of tea became just as much about the ritual as the tea itself. There is much to be said for the ritualistic properties of tea. Afternoon tea gives us a chance to slow down for a blessed moment and sit with a friend (or solo!) to steep, stir, and sip on a warm cup of something aromatic.

While your afternoon tea might not be just about the tea, for the following Atlanta hot spots, tea takes center stage as it is brewed with precision and care and served just as prettily as you might wish for. Whether it’s the medicinal or ritual benefits you’re seeking, Atlanta has spots both charming and delectable from which you can choose to sip. Pinky up is always optional, but of course politely encouraged.

Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party

This Candler Park cafe is quirky and intimate. You’re sure to feel right at home amongst the hanging lampshades and parasols, overflowing bookshelves, and eclectic art. The whole shop feels warm and cozy, just like a good cup of tea, really.

Due to the pandemic, the shop is now open Thursday through Sunday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. for walk-up service, what Dr. Bombay’s has deemed the Warm Scone Window. Drop in for their signature massive scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, baked goods, teas, coffee, samosas, quiche and sandwiches. Everything seems like perfect weekend morning fare.

If you are hoping to take your tea party on the go, they also offer a delectable Picnic High Tea to-go. Just be sure to order two hours before pick-up time.

Jayida Ché Herbal Tea Spot

At Jayida Ché Herbal Tea Spot you’re encouraged to ask questions. The informed staff is sure to know the answers. If you’re struggling with allergies, they might suggest their Allergy Ally tea. If you’re hoping for something refreshing the Minty Mix Lemonade is sure to satisfy. And if you’re looking to detox after an especially exuberant weekend, they might smile and offer you the Teatox Detox Tea.

The shop is bright and warm, with white tile and tins of teas stacked charmingly on wooden shelves. You can tell they are intentional on offering up the best tasting cups of tea with their intentionally customized loose-leaf blends.

The owners also want to make sure their customers stay informed with their How-To-Tea Workshop. The workshop is designed just for the customers who want to learn the tricks of the trade when it comes to making a good cup of tea using loose-leaf tea. You’ll also come away with 8 sample teas and the tools needed to properly steep them at home. The cost is $80. Reserve your seat today.

ZenTea Tea Bar and Meditation Room

This unassuming tea shop just a skip away from Buford Highway has it all when it comes to tea. The staff at ZenTea Tea Bar and Meditation Room is knowledgeable and friendly and willing to take the time to cater to any personal tea preferences.

Be sure to plan enough time to experience the sensory beauty of their tea offerings, which includes 160-plus options packed in small, fragrant tins. Make sure to inhale with eyes wide open. Many of the teas, like the silver buds called White Pearl, are as beautiful as they are fragrant.

Once you’ve made your choice, you’ll be compelled to close your eyes as you sip, breathing in intense aromas like strawberry mango and silken, floral ones like that White Pearl, because that’s the Zen part, and it’s lovely.

If you want to really take your time here, reserve a seat at a Tea Tasting at the ZenTea tea bar. They offer tea tasting classes every Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. The class is private and scheduled for afterhours so that the staff can give you their full attention. Each class features a specific type of tea. You’ll learn about its origin, brewing tips, and benefits. Plan on tasting 5 to 6 different teas and finishing the class with a complimentary dessert. $25 per guest.
